Week Eight: Voices

This week we focus on voices. We start with a smooth, groovy and powerful tribute to jazz musician Count Basie by French Henri Salvador. French Malik Djoudi drenches his charming love song in high-pitched and dreamy echoes. English Havelock is more into sexual gratification than into love, which leads him to an uplifting chorus with himself. English duo Sorry oddly but groovily mix admiration with a bit of retching. Scottish Walt Disco indulges in operatic excesses. Which leads us to stop in the 18th century for the poignancy and soothing nature of a religious chant by MozartBlack Honey let us have a taste of what a full and powerful rock voice can be. Is funk music a school of life? German The Mighty Mocambos seem to think so as they have their kids sing to an enthralling funk anthem. Australian The Bombay Royale and Hungarian Bete each have their take on the high women's voices that is often the trademark of Bollywood songs. Of Indian-Australian-Syrian-Serbian descent, Nadeah & Beki quirkily play with both lego and accents. English Little Simz brings her bouncing flow. Swedish Lucern Raze and English Swampmeat follow along with some laid-back blues. Gigliola Cinquetti mixes her clear voice with a rumbling bass line, a tinkering vibraphone  and strings for pure 60’s Italian pop bliss. And we end with Norwegian Okay Kaya repeatedly overdubbing her own voice in one of her eerie, offbeat and captivating chants.

Every Friday for Summer of Solidarity, the Euradio team picks 15(ish) cool tracks out of its recent airing list to showcase the best of what European sound has to offer.
